Teaching Agency in Bristol
The Supply Room opened its doors in March 2017 and rapidly grew into a team of 20 education recruitment consultants. In July 2020, we opened our Bristol branch and given that our co-founder grew up there, it already feels like home. In fact, it was in Bristol that Joe Birchenall first walked into a Bristol Teaching Agency to register as a teacher and left with an invite to attend a trainee Education Recruitment Consultant interview.
We caught up with Joe to ask why he has decided to return home.
Bristol is home. I was born in Southmead Hospital on the Northern side of the city and called Bristol home for 19 years. Although I have lived away from the city for several years, via Manchester, Ibiza, Barcelona and most recently, London, I knew Bristol would always eventually pull me back.
When I co-founded The Supply Room in London, I made it clear that a future branch in Bristol had to be in the plan.
What was your school life like in Bristol?
When I was born, my family moved to our new home in Bishopston and my parents have lived there ever since.
I have two sisters who both attended Bishop Road Primary School and so, naturally, that’s where I went.
Bishop Road is the largest primary school in Bristol and I absolutely loved it! The school is well-known for two famous former pupils, Cary Grant, a leading film star in Hollywood, and Paul Dirac, regarded as one of the most significant physicists of the 20th Century.
After completing my primary education, I moved on to Cotham School, following the same path that Dirac took. Other notable pupils at Cotham included a personal hero of mine, Gary Mabbut, future Tottenham Hotspur captain and England international.
I loved every minute of my school life in Bristol and I can’t wait to start working with the wonderful schools in the city once again!
What’s the most exciting part about returning home?
My immediate family all live in Bristol! My two sisters have also returned to the city after living away for many years too.
One lives in Sneyd Park, close to the wide-open green space of The Downs. The other lives in Shirehampton, an area full of Bristolian community spirit and situated along the banks of the River Avon. My nieces have both just started their school life at Stoke Bishop CoE Primary School and it’s great seeing them blossom in such a fantastic school.
My fiancee is from Devon, so Bristol also gives us easy access to see her family.
I started my career in education recruitment at a teaching agency in Bristol. I loved the role and made deep and meaningful relationships with schools right across Bristol, Bath, Gloucester and Somerset. From this experience, I know what the schools in the area look for, both from their candidates and their recruitment agency. I can’t wait to get back to working with Bristol schools again with The Supply Room and provide them, once again, with the first-class service from an agency they deserve.
All of the factors mentioned, mean the creation of a Bristol Branch is something I am very passionate about.
I’m proud of my city and will endeavour to provide the top-quality service both the schools and teachers of Bristol deserve!
